Garlicy Spice powder for Rice | Lassun powder | Vellulipaya podi

I am a hopeless Garlic fan!! It clearly shows in my food posts! Just love the flavor and needless to mention the amazing benefits these little pearls bring with them!

I shared another awesome recipe that you can have with Rice, Idli, Dosa or even Upma.  This crunchy garlic powder is for rice. It is very popular down South to have rice everyday and chutneys and podis are very common. This punch packed podi will make your day! i promise you.

Garlic has its own presence and a strong one, Lot of people love it yet want to avoid it because of it's pungent smell. If you are one of those, please do not make this spice powder, because it has Garlic written all over it and you will not enjoy it.
What do you need to make the Spicy Garlic powder?
  • Bengal Gram/Chana daal  - 1 cup
  • Black gram /Minapa Pappu - 4 cups
  • Dry Red Chillies  - as per taste
  • Tamarind - As much as a gooseberry
  • Salt  - As per taste
  • Lots of garlic
  • Chilli powder - a spoonfull

How to make Spicy Garlic Powder?

Step 1: Is to fry the Chana daal and then add the Urad Daal, once they start to brown add the dry red chilies and let these fry for about 3 to 4 minutes on low flame. Be cautious not to burn any of these ingredients. Keep them aside to dry.

Step 2: In the same pan add lots of garlic cloves and fry them. They should just about cook,no need to fry them. This is to ensure the raw smell of garlic goes away. Do not spend a lot of time on this.

Step 3: Is to add salt and a small piece of tamarind; Grind the lentils, salt and add the Chilli powder and pulse it again, make sure it mixes well.

Step 4:  Add the Garlic and grind it again. Make sure it all mixes well, let the spice powder cool down before you store it in a airtight box.
