Pepper Tomato Daal with mustard micro greens

Tomatoes are amazing to work with! They have this brilliant colour and a nice tangy taste! I love tomatoes so much; The first thing i will always want to do with tomatoes is a chutney, I have a special post dedicated to to the 5 different chutneys with tomatoes... one for everyone. Do look at it!

I have also shared a simple masala tomato daal, today's daal has a small twist. I am making it for my 3 year old who is down with cold. I want it to have a hidden home remedy , yet it should not be spicy. If i have cold, the first thing i will have is a hot hot piping garlic rasam, you can get that recipe here.

Today It is the Tomato daal for my 3 year old fussy toddler.. who can like smell the ingredients.. i am not joking ! He will eat a spoon and give me this 'I know you added something different in this look!! ' and then the negotiations start... ipad? you tube? phone? phone? a new toy!! then we come to a mutual agreement..... and he will eat!

Today's other big twist is my mustard microgreens! Microgreens are a big big source of nutrition and the most important part of consuming them is we never cook them. The below picture is of day 4 of my Microgreens.

This daal however has the goodness of pepper and other spices yet taste a bit mild. If you want to make it for yourself, you can add green chillies, chilli powder and a pinch of garam masala.

What do we need to make the Pepper tomato daal?
  • Tomatoes
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Cumin / Jeera
  • Carom seeds / Ajwain
  • Split black lentil / Urad daal
  • Turmeric powder / Haldi
  • Asafoetida / Heeng
  • Crushed Pepper / kali mirch
  • Ghee
  • Pigeon Pea / Toor Daal

How to make the Pepper tomato Daal?

Step 1: Like any daal, we will start with the TADKA! but this is for a toddler so i used Ghee. You can use oil if you want. But the Ghee gives it such a richer and yummier taste!

Take some ghee in a pan and add some ghee once it is hot add Urad daal followed by Jeera , Ajwain,  Heng, Haldi and fry for a bit, add the chopped garlic and fry till the raw smell goes away.

Step 2: Add the onions followed by salt and fry till they turn translucent, add the chopped tomatoes and cook till you see the ghee / oil separate.

Step 3: Add the cooked Toor daal and let all this cook till it all blends well and you get the consistency. Garnish with some microgreens.
