Chenna Poda

Ok, this one is really and absolutely underrated sweet! It is like the Indian milk cake! well it is not really Milk, it is curdled milk. These pictures are from the first ever time i tried it, and it turned out great!  My Husband lived in Odisha for a little while in his life and all of a sudden he thought of this sweet.

There are very few recipes on line that show how to make this dish, unlike other popular dishes that have hundreds of recipes. So I did a little research and found out that there are 2 most popular types one is the caramelised and baked version the other  is a simple baked one. I tried the caramelised version , since it is just a step more and adds a special twist to the Cake, this is a cake and not a cake, because how it is served is by scraping it off a huge baked pot and serving the crumble in a mud bowl.

Made with super simple ingredients this will definitely become a repeat dish at your home!  Chenna is basically paneer, fresh is the best. I will explain clearly how to curdle the milk. Now let us see how to make this awesome crumble cake!

What do you need to make the Chenna Poda:

  • Milk - 1 liter
  • Vinegar - 2 big spoons
  • Sugar - half a cup or a little more if you like it on the sweeter
  • Cardamom Powder - half a teaspoon
  • Semolina - about a big spoon

How to make the Channa Poda?

Step 1: Is to boil the milk and curdle it by adding curd or vinegar. Strain the Channa or the curdled milk and let it cool down a it.

Step 2: Add cardamom powder, sugar, semolina and mix this well add a little milk if the batter feels too dry. The consistency should be of semi solid.

Step 3: This is a interesting step; it adds a nice colour and crispiness to the milk cake. Take the baking tin you want to use , add sugar to it and melt it. The sugar will become brown and beautiful. spread that caramelised sugar in the tin.

Step 4: Over the caramelised sugar pour the mixed batter and we will bake it in a preheated oven at about 180 till it is done. Please note the temperature of the oven depends on the individual oven. Bake till a toothpick or a fork comes out clean. Done! we are ready to eat up the crumbled Channa poda.
