Lauki ke kofte / Bottle gourd curry

Lauki or kaddu is very good for the body. Did you know that drinking a glass of Lauki/ bottle gourd juice in the mornings will help reduce weight. What we are making today is probably one of the best dishes you can make with the bottle gourd. I have a strong reason to say this, the vegetable does not have any substantial taste! think about Lauki, it is just bland!

The only taste you get of any dish made with Lauki is of the components it has in that dish. The Kofta is probably what can force fill punch and flavor into these tiny kofta balls. You get to taste the Lauki when you bite into these soft and yummy dumplings. Serve them with some hot phulka and i bet whoever you serve it to will just love it!

Kofta if made of malai is much more softer and chewy. Making koftas from anything other than Malai will be a little hard. But i have a little tip for this, it will work out!

What do you need to make the Lauki ke Kofte:
  • Lauki / Bottle Gourd
  • Tomatoes
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Cumin

How to make the Lauki ke Kofte?

We will make these koftas in 2 big steps, The kofta balls and the base. The crispy balls with the flavour of Lauki and the thick gravy which is tangy and spicy and all that.

Lets first make the Kofta balls:

I made my Kofta balls in a appe pan, so these are super healthy , not deep fried and still taste yumm!

Step 1: Grate the Lauki and drain out the excess water; Add chickpea flour, salt and chilly powder. Make a nice dough by adding water. Keep this aside.

Step 2: Make tiny balls out of this kofta and keep them ready to cook / fry.

Step 3: Grease a appe pan and place the balls in it, cover and cook till they turn golden brown.

If deep frying:
Gently drop them into hot oil and fry until they are golden brown.

The Gravy or the base:

This is probably the most popular gravy from India. Tomato and onion gravy!!
Add kofta's it is a kofta base, add this to Potatoes and Peas and make the oh so popular Aloo mutter! it is the Live saving gravy for any chef. :)

Step 1: Roughly chop the Tomatoes and Onions and cook them in a spoon full of oil. keep it aside to cool down and grind it to a smooth paste.

Step 2: In a pan add 3- 4 spoons of oil add cumin and once it starts to splutter and cumin seed and then add the gravy we just prepared, add salt, chili powder, cumin powder a huge spoon of garam masala and mix and let this simmer.

Step 3: Is to unite these 2. Gently drop the Cooked kofta balls into the gravy cover and cook for 3 to 4 minutes. We are done! our yummy Lauki ke kofta is ready.
