Tomato and Mint Chutney on a stone grinder

I am back with another tomato chutney this one on a stone grinder! believe me It makes a HUGE difference! This was the first chutney we made on the stone after all the curing process! Please see a detailed post i wrote up on What to do before you star using the Stone grinder.

Stone grinder / Sil batta / Rubbu Rolu is not new to India. This traditional way of grinding anything was so good, it helped in more than one way! Exercise, save power, tastey food are only a few to name!

So i kept seeing this little roadside store with all kinds of stone stuff and this stone grinder would stare at me and call me to take it home. I am not joking this feeling is real. Anyways so finally i convinced myself that i do need it and sold the brilliant idea to my husband and bought this home!! Curing and  cleaning for about a week and done! that day came when i used it for the first time!

What do we need to make the Tomato and Mint chutney?
  • Tomatoes
  • Mint leaves
  • Coriander leaves
  • Green Chillies
  • Garlic (optional)
  • Salt

How to make the Tomato and Mint Chutney?

Step 1: In a pan add the green chillies, tomatoes and the Garlic (if using) and cook it, the tomatoes have to start limping and ooze some water.

Step 2: Switch off the gas; Add chopped coriander and a few mint leaves, some salt. Cover with a lid and leave it for 5 minutes.

Step 3: Transfer this to our stone grinder and grind it to a paste. You will not need but if you feel the need, add a little water. This chutney tastes awesome with Roti or rice!

Step 4: The crunch! take a little oil in a pan and add some Bengal gram / Chana daal, Mustard seeds / Rai,  Cumin/ Jeera and some broken Black daal / urad daal. Pour it over the chutney and we are done!
