Chatpata Chana - snack with sprouts















Black chana is the smaller darker chana from the chana / chickpea family and has a different taste compared to the kabuli chana that is more popular and the one we use to make chole. It is the Sravana masam and time of festivals and small functions in the south India. 



Specially the Varalaxmi Vratam, which is widely popular in south India, when the ladies deck up their goddess. 

Offer prayers in the morning and invite other women over and offer them customised goodies bags. The bag consists of a few standard things, Handful of sprouted / soaked Black chana, kumkum, Haldi, Betel Leaf, and a return gift. A simple way of thanking god for what we have and asking for a healthy life. At the end of such pooja's we are left with a collection of black soaked chana. This is an awesome recipe when you have lots of chana and want to make something quick and easy. 

This ChatPat chana is my mom's special snack. Of all the things you can make with the sprouted chana, i love this chatpat chana! Like it's name it is quick to make and tastes super yummy. 




What do you need to make Chatpata Chana?
  • Black chana soaked over night
  • Black salt 
  • Salt 
  • Chili Powder 
  • Oil

How to make Chatpata Chana?

Step 1: Soak the Chana overnight. If you can dry them on a soft cloth and let them sprout. 


Step 2: In a pan take a little oil and fry the soaked Chana till they turn crisp. Add curry leaves, green chillies, salt, chili powder and serve!
