Ada Dosa - Crispy and Healthy.

Dosa! This is probably one of the most popular dishes from South India and is becoming a national favourite. At least in Hyderabad i know of so any Dosa bandis/ Thela that have people waiting to get one dosa!

So Dosa is an amazing thing; comes in different types and the possibilities are endless. I have 2 top favorites; the Rava dosa (semolina/ sooji doa) and this Ada /Adai dosa. Let us take about this Ada dosa.

Ada is a combination of 3 different Lentils and Rice. Ada Dosa also has quite a few variations, try this one and i am sure you will stick to it and trust me it is not my love for it that is making me say this. It is rich in protein and a healthier as well. My MIL mentioned that her mother used to add finely chopped onions and also drumstick leaves and they loved it that way. We will make a plain Ada and the additional combinations you can try.

The most popular combination is serving it with Avail.  You can serve it with some Homemade Butter (yummmmmmyy in the tummy!), you can also serve it with some Tomato chutney or also with Special Dosa Powder. You can look up my blog for these recipes, except for Avail (which is coming soon!)

I personally love and recommend that you serve it with homemade butter , you will love it!

What do you need to make the Ada?
  • Rice 1.5 cups
  • Tur Daal 1/2 th cup
  • Chana Daal 1/2th Cup
  • Urad daal 1 Tbs (preferably with outer cover)
  • Salt
  • Small piece of Ginger
  • Asafoetida
  • Dry red Chillies (7 to 8)
  • Water (to soak the lentils)
  • Oil (just enough to roast the Ada)

How to make the Ada?

It is one of the simplest types of dosa ever! You will love the outcome.

Step 1: Wash the rice, daals and the red chili and soak them in water for a minimum of 1 hour.

Note: This batter will be coarse and the Ada is crisp but not the super thin crisp. Because we want our batter to be coarse, we do not need to soak it for long.

Step 2: Grind the soaked ingredients into a coarse batter; add salt and a piece of ginger to the batter.

Note: If you can leave the batter after grinding for 2 hours. Then the Ada will be super crispy. If you are running short on time you can make the ada immediately as well.

Step 3: Make sure your pan is nice and hot, stat spreading the batter exactly like how you make any dosa. Wait for it to brown (golden brown) and turn over and roast again. Serve it with some Homemade Butter.

Note:  You have to make the Dosa on low flame.
