Tomato Daal / Tomato Pappu

Tomatoes again! If you love tomatoes like me you have to try the spicy tomato chutney or the super instant & Spicy tomato dip.  You will just fall in love with these. Tomatoes are very easy to work with and add lot of flavour to whatever dish you add them in. TOmato Daal is probably the most easiest and popular too.

Tomato daal is like elementary in the daal world! anyone starts their cooking lessons with Tomato Daal. You cannot go wrong with this! Make it in anyway it will be a hit! there will be no one who will not like Tomato daal!If you are a beginner then you could try the simple no onion , no garlic version.

Try this this masaledaar version of Tomato daal; It will turn out so good you will stick to this recipe! It will take slightly longer than the simple one but trust me on this one! It is different in itself and will be a winner! OK I love it!

What do you need to make the special Tomato Daal?

  • Cooked Tuar Daal.
  • Tomatoes
  • Onions
  • Ginger and Garlic paste (fresh)
  • Green chillies
  • Fresh Coriander chopped (optional)
  • Cumin (Jeera/ Jeelakarra)
  • Mustard Seeds (rai / Aaavalu)
  • Bengal gram (chana daal, senaga pappu)
  • Broken Black gram (urad daal, minapapappu)
  • Coriander powder
  • Cumin Powder
  • Garam Masala
  • Salt

How to make the Special Tomato Daal:

Step 1 is The Tadka! This is the most important part of the daal! It makes the daal more tasty! I love to fry my tadka in ghee, it enhances the taste of the daal and adds a nice taste to it.

Add Bengal gram (chana daal) and let it fry for a bit, now add the Broken Black gram (urad daal) and fry; add the Cumin (Jeera) and finally the Mustard seeds (Rai). Fry till the mustard seeds begin to crackle, add green chillies and fry them well.

Note: For the daal i always like to slit the Green chillies lengthwise, as it is easy to find them while eating.

Step 2: Once the Mustard seeds start to crackle add the ginger and garlic paste, fry till the raw smell of garlic goes away. Add the sliced onion and salt ; Fry till they start to limp. Now add the tomatoes and fry for some time.

Step 3: Time to add the dry spices! Coriander powder, Cumin Powder, Turmeric Powder.  mix this and leave it to cook. You will know that it is all cooked when the tomatoes start to leave some oil.

Step 4: Add the Daal and mix all this together, check the salt level and add more if needed. I like my daal a little soupy, so i add water and cook this for like 3 minutes and garnish with fresh chopped coriander leaves. I did not have coriander at home, but please add as it enhances the taste of your daal.

That is it the yummy Special Tomato daal is ready!!
