Simple Khichdi- Moong daal Khichdi.

Kichdi is one of the most easiest, simple and popular Dish made in any Indian home.  In fact it is a baby's first solid food in India. Obviously it is much more simpler when you make it for a baby. Do not try to feed this to the baby, as this has a lot of spices and a baby cannot take it. I have a post on baby food coming up, you might want to read it if you wish.

I wanted to share something i had no clue about, only after i started to blog i am reading up about origin of dishes and i am surprised to learn that there are many Indian dishes that i thought world is not aware of, like kichdi, moong daal, chawal, is such an indian thing. But little did i know Kichdi has been a popular dish for as long as you can think and  was  mentioned by a Russian traveller in the 15th Century. Kichdi is like SO SOOO old.

It can easily be a dish that introduces  you to cooking, as you cannot go wrong with it. No ratio issues, no consistency problems, no restriction on vegetables. This is easily a no fail  dish that one and all will love! I am sure you have a ghar ki Kichidi recipe, please do share your special Khichdi recipe with me so i can try that. Thanks a lot in advance for that.

The basic kichdi is made with Rice, Moong Daal, Salt, green chillie and Jeera. But we made it for Lunch as a single item so we added a small twist and it turned out super yummy. So i have to share it with you and i hope you will like it as much as me and my family did and do  think of me the day you make it.

What do we need to make Khichdi?

  • Rice
  • Moond daal
  • Tomatoes
  • Onions
  • Cumin seeds
  • Garlic (generous amounts)
  • Ginger
  • Green peas
  • Bay leaf
  • Turmeric powder
  • Chilli powder
  • Ghee

How to make Khichidi ?

Step 1 is to soak the rice and daal for 15 minutes and then cook it in a pressure pan. You need to pour at least 4 times the water; add turmeric powder, salt and green chillies to the rice and daal. Khichdi tastes awesome when the rice and daal are all mashed up and mix well with the flavours. Leave it in the pan for at least 4 whistles.

Step 2: Actually this needs to be done parallel to step one, while the rice and daal are cooking, let us make our masala. In a pan add some ghee, once the ghee is hot and fry the cumin till it browns and you feel the super nice aroma in your kitchen. Now add the bay leaves, Garlic and Ginger fry till the raw smell goes away.

Add the Onions and fry for 3-4 minutes. Add the tomatoes, green peas and add a little bit of red chilli powder, give this a nice mix and add a little water if you think it will burn, do not add salt as we already added it while cooking our daal chawal. We can adjust the salt levels later after tasting the khichdi.

Once all the vegetables fry well add the rice and mix them well.  Test your salt and adjust if more is required. Serve it with raita or some Aam ka Achar.
